The Tesla Roadster—which is occupied by a spacesuit-clad mannequin called Starman—is taking an oblong orbital path around the sun, sometimes traveling as far away as Mars’ orbit and sometimes as close as Earth’s orbit.
Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster (sometimes called the SpaceX Roadster) isn’t on some major scientific mission. Instead, it was launched in February 2018 to serve as a dummy payload for the Falcon Heavy test flight and became an artificial satellite of the Sun.
The cherry-red 2010 Roadster was personally owned by Musk and used for commuting to work. It was the first production car launched into space and the first to orbit the sun.
