Where is the spare tire in a Mini Cooper?

My daughter’s heading back to college, and my partner and I gifted her our old Mini Cooper for the year. We want to make sure she knows what to do if there’s a flat, but it seems that we’ve forgotten this knowledge, too! Where is the spare tire on a Mini Cooper?

Don’t feel ashamed—most drivers could use a refresher on basics like changing their tires. The Mini Cooper spare tire is typically kept under the rear of your vehicle. That said, some Cooper models feature run-flat tires instead, which are designed to last 50 miles after a puncture to allow you to drive immediately to a repair shop.
If your daughter’s Mini Cooper has a spare tire, rather than the run-flat tire, here’s how you can access it:
  • Under the trunk, remove the floor trim panel
  • Locate the tool tray, then remove the lowering handle and socket
  • Remove the tool tray so you can reach the spare tire carrier securing assembly
  • With the socket tool, take off the cover securing nut
  • Attach the lowering handle to the carrier stud
  • Lift up the lowering tool and pinch the locking clip in place
  • Using the lowering handle, lower the spare tire carrier and remove the tire
Note that you cannot drive at speeds over 50 mph while using a Mini Cooper micro space-saver spare. You also can’t drive the spare for more than 70 miles, so you’ll need to get it to a mechanic ASAP.
