Where is the BMW Z4 made?

I drive a BMW Z4, and I was shocked to learn that it wasn’t lovingly built by Bavarian elves in a factory nestled in a German alpine forest, but right here in the USA. That can’t be true. Where is the BMW Z4 manufactured?

Indeed, the BMW Z4 is built right here in the USA, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, BMW’s first full production plant built outside of Germany.
The Spartanburg plant also produces the following BMW models:
  • X6
  • X5
  • All M performance coupes
  • All diesel BMWs
The Spartanburg plant acts as a body shop, paint shop, and assembly line for the aforementioned vehicles. So, while your Z4’s body was built right here in the USA, its engine and transmission were not. Those are built at BMW’s Steyr plant in Austria.
BMW built the plant here in the U.S. in order to gain greater access to the lucrative North American market and to strengthen its international production system. Spartanburg was also a strategic choice due to its proximity to Charleston’s deep water port and ease of shipment to markets across the globe, as well as the area’s strong technical colleges for use as a potential pool for recruitment.
