Where is the 2009 Honda Civic’s OBD port location?

My Civic’s Check Engine light came on, and I suspect it’s the gas cap coming loose (again). I bought an OBD scanner to save myself the trip to the mechanic, but I can’t find the port for the life of me. Where is the OBD port located on a 2009 Honda Civic?

Sorry to hear your Civic’s giving you issues with the
check engine light
! The OBD port on a 2009
Honda Civic
is located under the steering wheel to the right.
You can recognize the OBD port as a light gray rectangle with a connection hole in the middle. To
use your OBD scanner
, just insert it into the port, record the trouble codes that appear, and then break down each character as such:
  • First character: the part of the vehicle impacted by the issue
  • Second character: distinguishes whether the code is generic or manufacturer-specific
  • Third character: a more specific idea of the affected area in the vehicle
  • Last character: the specific problem at hand
Your OBD scanner likely came with an app that can help you navigate the codes, but you can also consult online resources or purchase a trouble code book to understand what’s wrong.
When in doubt, it never hurts to take your Civic in for service, too—as frustrating as it might seem when you’ve made a few trips. While a
check engine warning light
may be a benign problem, it could also be pretty serious, so it’s not something you want to dismiss for too long.
