You can find a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s fuel pump relay located under the hood in the main fuse box on the left side by the battery.
But if you suspect you’re having issues with your fuel pump relay, you should probably take your car to the shop to be diagnosed by a professional. Alternatively, if you have the proper equipment and know-how, you can perform a DIY diagnostic check.
Here’s what you have to do:
Park your car in a safe area on level ground. Engage your parking brake and put the transmission in neutral or park.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position, but don’t turn it all the way to start the car. Try to listen for the fuel pump to activate as you turn the key. It should sound like a faint buzzing, humming, or clicking noise.
Open your hood and locate the fuel pump relay. You should be able to easily locate it by referring to the diagram on your main fuse box’s cover. If you’re having trouble tracking it down, reference your owner’s manual.
Disconnect the negative cable from the car battery using a wrench or socket set. This disables the power to the fuel pump and all related circuits.
Remove the fuel pump relay using your fingers or needle nose pliers.
Connect the probes of a multimeter tool to the load and battery pins in the relay. You’ll need to use a 12-volt power supply or voltage regulator to feed power to the relay. Connect the ground of the power supply to the ground pin of the relay.
Feed power to the input voltage pin. Every time the power touches the input voltage, the multimeter should beep to indicate continuity. If there’s no continuity, you’re dealing with a damaged relay.
Performing at-home diagnostic tests can be a great way to save on your overall car ownership costs. An easier way, however, is to simply lower your Jeep Grand Cherokee insurance costs
