Pop the hood on your Miata and look toward the driver’s side of the engine bay. You’ll see a small rectangular black box labeled Diagnosis. When you flip open the plastic box you’ll see several pins and a diagram detailing the location of each pin.
The Mazda Miata didn’t become OBD II compliant until the 1996 model year. Miatas that are older than that have an OBD I port, which won’t be compatible with an OBD II code reader. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to diagnose your car, you’ll just need to use a first-generation OBD code reader instead.
