Where is the 1992 Lexus SC400’s OBD port location?

I love my vintage Lexus (it’s a 1992 SC400), but lately, it’s been giving me grief. I want to run a diagnostic on it. Where’s the OBD port?

Car trouble is never fun! The OBD port location in a 1992
Lexus SC400
will likely be under the hood on the driver’s side—look for a box labeled “diagnosis” that sits on the motor.
Cars from earlier than 1996 have an Onboard Diagnostics I (OBD-I) system. The upgraded
OBD-II system
that you’ll find in current models is much more tech-savvy. Because of the jump in tech, most scan tools won’t retroactively work for OBD-1 systems. Unless you’re handy, we recommend visiting a Lexus dealer or a professional mechanic to run a diagnosis.
If you decide to check your OBD codes yourself, proceed with caution:
  • Pop the hood to access the OBD-1 port located underneath the “diagnosis” box.
  • With the OBD-1 port exposed, find something to create a temporary connection between T1 and E1 (ie: an insulated length of wire).
  • Turn your key to the “On” position and count how many times your Check Engine Light flashes.
Longer light flashes mean 10s, while shorter flashes indicate 1s. These codes can be difficult to decipher. If you’re not sure what your code means, refer to your owner’s manual or take your car to a dealership or a trusted mechanic to diagnose the problem.
Good luck!
