Where is the 1986 Nissan 300ZX’s OBD port location?

I’ve had my car for decades, and I have no plans to trade it in or get a new one. Unfortunately, my check engine light is on, though. I want to find out what the issue is myself rather than pay a mechanic, but I can’t find where to plug my OBD scanner in. Can you tell me where the OBD port is on a 1986 Nissan 300ZX?

It’s great that you want to try to diagnose your car’s issues on your own, but you’re not going to find an OBD2 port on your 1986
Nissan 300ZX
. This technology didn’t become standard on cars until 1996.
Instead, what you’re looking for is a gray plug located under the driver’s side dash near the hood release latch. Once you’ve located this gray plus, follow these steps to pull trouble codes from your
Nissan
:
  • Turn the ignition key to the ON position, but don’t turn the car on.
  • Looking at the gray plug, you’ll notice that one end is flat, and the other end is tapered. With the flat end toward the ground, take a jumper wire and insert it into the two bottom right holes of the plug for one second.
  • Pull out the jumper wire.
  • You’ll see the
    check engine warning light
on your 300ZX’s dash flashing rather than staying lit up
  • Count the flashes to find out what code number you’re dealing with. For example, six fast flashes mean a code six, while one long flash followed by two fast flashes means a code 12.
  • There will be a long pause between each code, so you’ll know whether you’re dealing with a single code or more than one.
Once you know your codes, you can look them up in your Nissan’s owner’s manual, or do a quick Google search to find a cheat sheet.
