You’re right to question the origin of the Audi name—it’s a little bit complicated! The Audi name comes from a Latin translation of one of Audi’s founders, August Horch.
When Horch originally founded the company in 1909, he named it August Horch Automobilwerke, but presumably deciding that it didn’t have a great ring to it, he translated his last name to Latin—which loosely translates to “listen”—and the name has existed ever since, despite a short hiatus from 1932 to 1964.
