Where are the rest stops on I-55 in Illinois?

My husband and I are planning a road trip mostly following Route 66, from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica. We split up our planning by different states, but I can’t find the rest stops on I-55 in Illinois. There seems to be some conflicting information online. First off, that sounds like an epic road trip! Route 66 has mostly been converted to interstates today, like I-55 through
Illinois
, but it’s still an incredible drive and still the undisputed king of the ultimate American road trips.
There are five rest stops along I-55 in Illinois. Going from north to south, these include northbound and southbound stops in the following areas before reaching St. Louis:
  • Limestone—mile marker 194
  • Funk’s Grove—mile marker 149
  • Rail Splitter—mile marker 104
  • Coalfield—mile marker 64
  • Homestead—mile marker 27
Illinois has fairly clean, safe, and nice-looking rest areas, especially along I-55. And there are plenty of towns along the way, including the city of
Springfield
where you can find some great hotels and excellent food, too.
