Although Tesla has expanded its operations globally, a vast majority of Tesla cars are made at the Tesla Fremont Factory in Fremont, California or at the Gigafactory Texas in Austin, Texas.
Tesla assumed ownership of the Fremont property from GM—who built the plant in 1962—in 2010. Today, the facility is one of the largest manufacturing plants in California and employs over 22,000 workers. The Austin factory opened in 2021 and produces both the Model Y, as well as the future Cybertruck.
While the Fremont and Texas plants produce cars for the American market, the Asian markets are a bit different. To cut down on logistics and overhead costs, Teslas for the Asian market are produced in Shanghai, China, albeit at a much smaller clip than in Fremont. A factory in Germany also recently opened, but it has yet to produce the first fleet of European vehicles.
If you’re thinking about buying a Tesla, rest assured you’re getting one of the only cars on the road that’s authentically American. Just make sure you don’t pay too much for Tesla car insurance
