When you switch home insurance providers, is your old provider still on the hook for any previous claims?

I just switched to a new home insurance company, but my old insurer is in the middle of settling my claim regarding some damage to my fence. Is my old insurance company still responsible for handling this claim?

Yes, that’s correct. Homeowners insurance companies are still responsible for a claim or loss that happened while you were actively insured with them, even if you canceled or switched providers after the fact. They are not permitted to default on a settlement simply because you are no longer an active policyholder with them.
