When was China's first electric car?

My husband says China doesn’t have any electric cars yet, but I’m sure that can’t be right. China must have electric cars. When was China's first electric car?

Answer: Great question! China’s first electric cars started showing up in 2007. China had electric bikes long before they ever had an electric car. In the 1990s,
electric bikes
were one of the most prolific ways of getting around in China.
However, China could see how important electric vehicles were going to become, so they started an 863 EV Project in 2001, and by 2007 they had electric vehicles in China. By the first half of 2008, they had sold 366 units, which was a 107.9% from the year before.
Although China might have seemed to have gotten off to a slow start, they’re now topping
electric vehicle sales
China is now the top-selling electric vehicle selling country in the world. In 2021, they sold 3,519,054 electric vehicles. This accounts for more than half the electric vehicles sold globally.
To pit that against other countries, the runner-up is Germany, which sold 695,657 electric vehicles, accounting for 10.2% of the world’s electric vehicle sales.
The Chinese government has imposed a mandate on auto manufacturers stating that electric vehicles must make up 40% of all car sales by 2030, a goal they’re on track to blow out of the water. The anticipated saturation of electric cars by 2030 in China is 60%.
