When is it legal to back up on an expressway?
I totally missed my exit the other day and I stopped and backed up to get back on track. My mom was in the passenger seat and was really nervous that we were doing something illegal. I’m allowed to back up on the expressway if I’m careful, right?

Your mom was right to be nervous. It is never legal to back up on an expressway.
Even if you check for traffic and back up quickly, you are still breaking the law. Instead, carry on to the next exit, then backtrack to your destination on city streets or hop back on the expressway that’s going in the opposite direction.
Perhaps surprisingly, you shouldn’t even back up while you are pulled over or on the shoulder of the expressway. You could face these penalties for backing up on the expressway for any reason:
