What's the difference between a car insurance agent and broker?

I'm requesting quotes to switch car insurance providers. I've spoken with an agent for Travelers, but I've also been in touch with a broker. Does it matter who I get my insurance through?

“The difference between a car insurance agent and a broker is:
  • A
    car insurance
agent works for an insurance company. They represent the company when selling insurance to you.
  • A car insurance broker works for you. They represent you when selling you insurance and are independent from any insurance companies. This means that a broker can look into various carriers to find the best rate as they aren’t tied to one company.
As a consumer, you can get insurance through a broker like
Jerry
or an agent. However, shopping through a broker may provide more options and rates than captive insurance agents may offer. This may result in a choice that fits your expectations, needs, and budget.”
