What's the best route from Rapid City to Yellowstone?

My wife and I are planning a trip to see several national parks and monuments out west. We’re going to arrive in Rapid City to see Mt. Rushmore, but then we want to head to Yellowstone. What’s the best way to get from Rapid City to Yellowstone?

South Dakota
and
Wyoming
are neighboring states, but you’ll find just how massive Wyoming is on your trip. Don’t worry, here’s the best route from
Rapid City
to Yellowstone to get you there quickly and in one piece:
  • Hop on I-90 West from Rapid City until you reach Buffalo, Wyoming
  • In Buffalo, take Exit 58 for US Highway 16 West
  • Off US-16 just west of Ten Sleep, Wyoming, make a right on Lower Norwood Road
  • Eventually, Lower Norwood will reach Wyoming 31. Make a left here
  • In Manderson, Wyoming, go west on US Highway 20 (right turn)
  • Head west on Wyoming 30 (left turn) near Basin
  • Merge onto US Highway 14 headed west near Burlington
  • Stay on US Highway 14 to get to the East Entrance of Yellowstone (note that US-14 becomes US-20 just outside of the entrance)
And that’s it! It may seem convoluted, but it’s relatively simple considering you’re traveling 440 miles. Expect the trip to take about 7 hours if you drove straight through, but considering the scenery and roadside attractions, it may take a little longer.
Once you leave Rapid City, you’re in fairly remote areas the rest of the way. To avoid any sticky situations, add
towing and labor coverage
to your car insurance—it acts just like roadside assistance. To compare rates, use the
