I’m going to Savannah for the weekend to visit family and will be driving—what’s the best route to get there from Charleston?

The trip from
Charleston
to Savannah
takes just over two hours and covers roughly 108 miles. The best route to get between the two coastal cities takes Highway 17 and I-95. Here’s how to get there:
- Get on SC-30 W
- Follow US-17 S, I-95 S and US-17 S to GA-25 Connector S in Savannah
- Take the GA-25 exit from US-17 S
While the drive between Charleston and Savannah is pretty short, there are still plenty of places to hit along the way if you’re looking to explore. Here are some great places that are just a short detour away:
- Folly Beach, South Carolina: One of the most popular day trips for locals and tourists, stroll along the Folly beach pier or wander through the beachy downtown areas. Rent a paddleboard or kayak and watch for dolphins or turtles.
- Edisto Beach State Park: Hike the trails and check out the environmental education center to learn about the island.
- Old Sheldon Church Ruins: Dating back to the mid-1700s, this hauntingly beautiful church is surrounded by lush landscape.
- St. Helena Island, South Carolina: The perfect spot to immerse yourself in natural beauty and learn about the Gullah culture.
- Savannah National Wildlife Refuge: Just 15 minutes north of Savannah, this 30,000-acre wildlife refuge is home to incredible marsh-dwelling flora and fauna.
