What’s the best driving route from Minneapolis to Las Vegas?

My wife has decided that we aren’t tough enough to brave Minnesota winters anymore, so we bought a condo in the desert. Now, as a pious man, I’m slightly perturbed that this condo is in Las Vegas, but we all know who wears the pants in this marriage (hint: it is not me). We’re heading out in a few days before the snow hits. What’s the best driving route from Minneapolis to Las Vegas?

Well, we here at Jerry applaud you and your wife’s embrace of the snowbird lifestyle in
Nevada
!
That being said, the best driving route from
Minneapolis
to Las Vegas is I-80 W to I-70 W. It will take about 25 hours and cover 1,658 miles. Given the length, feel free to split this into a three- or four-day trip.
What will you see along the way from the Land of Snow and Ice to your new winter home in the Desert Den of Decadence? Plenty! Here are some highlights:
  • Head south from Minneapolis along I-35 and hit
    Des Moines, Iowa
, the No. 1 spot for U.S. insurance companies (take that, Hartford)
  • From Des Moines, head west along I-80 and pass through
    Omaha, Nebraska
, where you can stretch your legs by sauntering along the Lewis and Clark National Trail
  • Continue driving west into the scrub of Eastern Colorado before passing through cosmopolitan
    Denver
  • From Denver, head west along I-70 and through the mountains before crossing into the high desert of Eastern Utah
  • You’ll head south on I-15 at
    Richfield, Utah
, and motor through the Dixie National Forest
  • Scoot through the northwestern corner of Arizona before crossing into Nevada at Mesquite
  • Head down the Las Vegas Freeway and into Las Vegas
Now remember—as a pious man, you may be tempted like never before, so just let your dear wife keep wearing the pants. Stay strong.
