What’s the average home office size?

I’ve decided to make the leap and start my own business. I’m going to be starting out small and working from home, but I’m not sure how much space I should set aside for this kind of thing. What’s the average home office size?

Congratulations on this first big step for your new business! The average home office size typically falls between 100 and 200 square feet. The right home office size for you, however, will depend on what kind of business you’re running and how much space you need to do the tasks involved.
In case you weren’t already aware, your home office size can significant impact your tax obligations.
As a self-employed person, depending on your home office size, you might be able to deduct various home maintenance costs on your taxes proportional to how much your office takes up in your house. For example, if your home office size was 100 square feet and your house was 1,000 square feet, it’s possible you could deduct 10% of your monthly energy costs on your taxes. You can ask a tax professional about how this could work for you.
However, in order for you to claim deductions related to your home office size, your home office has to be a space dedicated solely to your business and not a multi-purpose space (like a living or dining room), so keep that in mind.
Keep in mind, also, that the IRS might take up issue with an office that’s significantly larger than the average home office size, so be sure you can justify the size of your home office if you need to.
Best of luck with your new business! If you’re conducting your business from home, that makes it essential that it’s protected by the right
