What will happen if I don't pay my HOA?

Money has been really tight lately and I am having trouble making ends meet. There doesn't seem to be much I can cut back on, but I have to pay my HOA $210 per month. What will happen if I don't pay my HOA and use that money for my other bills?

I get it; things are getting more expensive every day! If you don’t pay your HOA fees, the outcome could be disastrous and cost you even more money. Here are some of the possible repercussions:
  • They can send your bill to collections
  • They can sue you: The lawsuit could pile on interest, late fees, and attorney fees. It could even result in wage garnishment.
  • They can revoke your community privileges: If you have common areas like a park, pool, or clubhouse can be suspended until past due payments are met.
  • Foreclosure: Depending on how the rules stated in your association’s CC & R (declarations of covenants, conditions & restrictions), they can foreclose on your home after just a few missed payments.
Your best action is to speak with the association directly and let them know what is happening with your finances. You are not alone—many people are having trouble making ends meet. They may be able to defer payments or set up a payment arrangement.
