Instead, the state relies on the discretion and judgment of the police officer who witnesses your driving to determine whether or not you were acting recklessly.Since the law is worded this way, speeding isn’t the only thing that can result in a reckless driving charge. You can also get this charge if you:
- Weave through traffic
- Fail to signal when turning or changing lanes
- Ignore traffic signals or stop signs
- Pass in a no passing zone
Reckless driving is a misdemeanor charge in Massachusetts that may show up on your permanent record. The charge also comes with strict penalties, including:
- Fine of $50 to $500
- Jail time ranging from 30 days to two years
- Five points on your driver’s license
