What speed is considered reckless driving in Alabama?

I have a bit of a lead foot. My friend told me that if I go too much over the speed limit, I can get a reckless driving charge. How fast is considered reckless driving in Alabama?

Reckless driving in
Alabama
is up to the discretion of the police officer who pulls you over. While the law doesn’t dictate a specific speed to be considered reckless driving in Alabama, the speed that’s most likely to result in a reckless driving charge is 26 mph or more over the speed limit.
Alabama only defines reckless driving as driving in a manner that creates a substantial and unjustifiable risk of harm to a person or property. You can also get a reckless driving charge for:
  • Speeding
  • Swerving in and out of traffic
  • Ignoring stoplights and stop signs
  • Passing a stopped school bus
  • Ignoring safety laws
  • Switching lanes without using turn signals
Speeding more than 25 mph over the speed limit can result in five points on your license and a fine between $190 and $300. If an officer charges you with reckless driving, however, you could face these harsher penalties:
  • Six points on your license
  • Between five days (mandatory) and 90 days in jail
  • A fine of no more than $500
Your license will be suspended if you accumulate twelve or more points on your license in a twelve-month period in Alabama. However, any amount of points can cause your car insurance rates to significantly increase. Before you pay an inflated premium for your insurance, use the
