What should you do when driving behind a motorcycle?

Driving behind a motorcyclist can be nerve-wracking! Not only are they harder to see, but even the smallest error can lead to serious injury or death. When driving behind a motorcyclist, you should keep these safety tips in mind:
- The most important rule is to give them extra space. Because motorcycles stop quickly, hovering behind them too closely significantly increases the risk of injury or death to the driver.
- Motorcycles’ size makes them more difficult to spot on the road, so always check your blind spots twice if you know a motorcycle is nearby. They’re easy to miss if you aren’t looking for them.
- Always be aware of the weather conditions if you’re behind a motorcycle. They’re at a greater risk for falling on gravel, wet or icy roads, and metal surfaces like bridges or railroad tracks.
- If you must pass, remember to pass them with caution. Passing a motorcycle increases the wind pressure, which could very well push the motorcycle over or make it harder to steer. Try to pass them in open areas where you can go slower and give a wider berth.
