What should I know about 2016 Kia Soul EV battery degradation?

My neighbor is moving out of the country and is looking to unload her 2016 Kia Soul EV. I’ve never owned an electric vehicle before, so I’m a bit in the dark about how the batteries work or degrade over time. Is there anything I should know about the Soul EV and its battery?

Although Kia hasn’t issued any statements or recalls regarding 2016 Kia Soul EV battery degradation, several online forums state that the battery has degraded up to one-third by 2022. Compared to other EVs, this is a substantial amount, as most EVs have battery degradation of around 10% to 20% after six or seven years.
The true issue is that the 2016 Kia Soul EV only has a range of 93 miles, which is far less than most other EVs on the market. Add in battery degradation of 33%, and you’re looking at a range of only 62 miles, which could be a hindrance for some drivers—including yourself.
If you’re going to
buy a used car
like the Soul EV, make sure that you check the battery gauge and have it
inspected by an electric car mechanic
