What should I do if my vehicle won't pass an emissions inspection in Illinois?
I have a car with over 200,000 miles on it, and I know it won't pass an emissions inspection in Chicago. What should I do?

Unfortunately, the answer is probably not what you want to hear.
If your car won’t pass an emissions test in Illinois, you won’t be able to renew your license plates. That means that your
vehicle registration
is invalid, so you can’t legally drive. So, you’ll need to get it repaired by a certified repair person and then get it retested.There are some exemptions given if your car won’t pass the test, including a repair waiver or an economic hardship extension. In both cases, you need documentation to prove you qualify.
If your car still fails, it may be time to get a new vehicle.
