What should I do if my 2012 Dodge Caravan’s sliding door won't open?

We’ve been happily driving our 2012 Dodge Caravan for nearly a decade. However, the sliding door on the driver’s side won’t open anymore. We’ve tried manually opening it, but it’s locked shut. What could the problem be?

The sliding side door is one of the best perks of the minivan life, so it’s pretty inconvenient when it doesn’t work. You may accidentally have the child lock activated or your
key fob
is dead.
If you’ve looked into those possibilities and you’re still having trouble, here are a few more reasons your Caravan’s sliding door won’t open:
  • The door latch motor has died
  • The locking mechanism assembly is faulty
  • The electronic wiring is malfunctioning
  • The door latch cable is broken
  • The
    door latch
    is jammed
  • Something is blocking the door’s track
There are more potential culprits, but for almost any of them, you’ll want to take your Caravan to the nearest Dodge dealership so they can take a closer look.
Before you head to the repair shop, check to see if your van is included in a recent recall for Dodge and Chrysler minivans. Just put your
Caravan’s VIN
into the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. If your model is on the list, Dodge might cover the repairs.
If not, your
Dodge Caravan car insurance
policy might cover the repairs—especially if you have
collision coverage
and the was damage caused by a collision.
