What kinds of drugs can affect your driving ability?

I took a muscle relaxant about an hour ago—is it okay for me to drive? What kinds of drugs can affect your driving ability?

That’s definitely a good thing to check! Both legal and illegal drugs can affect your driving ability.
You can be pulled over for driving under the influence of the following drugs:
  • Marijuana or cannabis products
  • Opioids
  • Methamphetamines
  • Prescription or over-the-counter medication that causes drowsiness or other side effects that impair driving abilities
For muscle relaxants and other over-the-counter medications, look at the label—there will usually be an advisory if you should not be driving while taking it. If you have questions about a medication you’re taking long-term, speak to your doctor or pharmacist about potential side effects.
If you ever feel like you are not in full control of your ability to drive or feel impaired by a drug you are taking, don’t get behind the wheel. Ask for a ride, call an Uber, or stay where you are if it’s safe to do so. Driving while impaired by any drug poses danger to yourself and others.
