What is Toyota's adaptive cruise control?

What’s the difference between regular cruise control and adaptive cruise control? I keep seeing adaptive cruise control as a feature for Toyotas and I don’t understand what it means.

While regular cruise control just maintains a preset speed for you,
Toyota
’s adaptive cruise control (ACC) can detect other vehicles in the same lane. Using that information, your car will speed up and slow down to maintain a preset distance between you and the car in front of you. If necessary, your car can even automatically hit the brakes to prevent an accident.
This isn’t the same as having a self-driving car, of course! You’ll still have to pay attention to the road in case of an emergency. Still, adaptive cruise control can be very helpful by keeping you safer on long drives.
