You’re right, EVs are much heavier. EV batteries weigh about 1,000 pounds, give or take a few hundred pounds depending on the make of the vehicle.
In other words, those batteries weigh a ton (or at least half of one–pun intended!). Part of the reason for the extra weight is the difference in its construction: there is some extra shielding framework and suspension around it to secure the battery in place and protect it from the elements.
Unfortunately, the weight of the car actually works against its range. The power of the electric motors should ideally have increased the driving range of traditional gas cars, respective to their shape and size, but the weight of EVs challenges this.
While many of the higher end manufacturers have engineered vehicles with considerably long driving ranges, companies are working on increasing range while also minimizing the cost for buyers.
