Congratulations on your recent move! The driving age in
Maine
is 16 years old, but you can apply for a learner’s permit as early as your 15th birthday. Maine requires a 3-step graduated driver’s licensing system for new drivers under 18 and restrictions for drivers under 21.To apply for your learner’s permit you must:
- Be at least 15 years old
- Complete a written examination
- Submit a certificate of completion for a state-approved driver’s education course if under the age of 18
To apply for your driver’s license, you must be at least 16 and meet the following requirements:
- Complete an approved driver’s education course
- Hold your learner’s permit for at least six months
- Log 70 hours of practice driving while accompanied by a licensed driver
- Pass your road test
If you’re under 18, you’ll be issued an intermediate license that includes a few restrictions. After you hold your intermediate license for 270 days, you can upgrade to an unrestricted license so long as you received no traffic violations during that period.
If you are already 18 when you first apply for your license, you won’t be required to take driver’s ed. If you are 21-years old when you apply, there are even fewer restrictions and requirements.
