What is the legal driving age in Iowa?

I love being a parent but it’s hard to chauffeur four kids around to school and extracurriculars. We live in Iowa—at what age can they start driving?

Driving busy teens around is definitely a chore—especially when you have multiple children! The driving age in
Iowa
is 18 years old, but the state has a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) system for budding drivers as young as 14.
To get an instruction permit as a young driver, you must be at least 14 years old and pass vision and knowledge exams. You also require consent from a parent or guardian. This permit allows teens to drive at any time with adult supervision.
An intermediate license allows teens to drive without adult supervision during the day. To get it, drivers must:
  • Hold a permit for at least one year
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Complete a driver’s education course
The final step is obtaining a full license. Teens can apply for this license at 17 if they meet the requirements (including driver’s education and behind-the-wheel practice) or at 18 if they do not.
Once your kids do finally start driving, you’ll have to add them to your
car insurance
policy. Multi-driver policies tend to get expensive—especially when young drivers are involved. To save money, use the super app [Jerry] (
