I drive a Honda Clarity, and I haven’t had any problems with it so far. My friend is a mechanic, though, and he said he’s heard that these cars have problems with the brake system. Is that true?

It’s good that you haven’t experienced such brake problems yourself! Honda’s plug-in hybrid and electric sedan had a lot going for it, but even the best cars aren’t immune to a few problems here and there. The
, for example, suffered some brake system problems over the years—especially the 2018 PHEV model. Here are the most common problems drivers experienced with the Clarity’s brake system:
Dashboard errors illuminating randomly, indicating brake system errors, sometimes locking the parking brake
Random and sudden braking
Brake lights malfunctioning
Vehicle moving even when brakes are applied
Automatic brakes kicking in suddenly
While there were no official recalls, a handful of complaints have been made to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a variety of issues. That being said, this doesn’t seem to be a widespread issue. Since Honda hasn’t issued a recall, you’ll probably have to pay for any repairs for your brakes out of pocket unless the problem (and your car!) is still covered by Honda’s warranty.
