What is the frequency at which the engine oil level should be checked?

I usually wait until my oil light comes on, but my friend thinks this is the wrong way to take care of a car. He says I should check the level more often. What is the frequency at which the engine oil level should be checked?

Your engine oil level should be checked at least once a month, or at least before you take a long road trip.
It is critical to maintain the correct level of engine oil for proper lubrication. Otherwise, your engine could overheat.
It’s easy to check the oil level.
Park your car after driving and then wait five minutes. Pop the hood and use the oil dipstick to check the oil level. Remember to wipe off the dipstick before dipping it again to get an accurate read. A warm engine will provide the correct oil level—just be sure it’s not hot so you don’t burn yourself.
You can top up the oil on a monthly basis. Set a calendar reminder or get in the habit of checking whenever you fuel up at the gas station. You should also get a full oil change about twice per year or according to your manufacturer’s instructions (which can be found in your owner’s manual).
