What is the driving age in Washington D.C.?

Our 12-year-old keeps asking when they’ll finally be allowed to drive, and I realized I actually didn’t know the correct answer! When can I tell our pre-teen that they’ll be old enough to drive in Washington D.C.?

Lots of kids dream of that fateful day when they finally get to sit behind the wheel of the family car and drive off on their own. In Washington D.C., you must be at least 16 years old to take the tests for your DC DMV learner permit.
Here’s what you need to know:
  • Once they’ve turned 16, your teenager will be eligible to try for their learner’s license, but they’ll have to pass both a written exam and a vision screening.
  • Once your teen has turned 17, as long as they have had their learner permit for 6 months, they can apply for a provisional license, which would allow them to drive alone during certain hours of certain days—restricting driving after 11 p.m. or 12 a.m. until morning. Exceptions can be made for school/work.
  • Before turning 18 you’ll be restricted to no more than 2 minor passengers and will follow the same curfew times. However, as long as you’ve had your provisional license for at least 6 months, you can apply for your Full License with Conditions.
Once your kid—no longer a teen by this point—has turned 21, they’ll be able to apply for their Full Adult License.
Remember that when your kids start driving the family vehicle, it
will affect your insurance rates
