What is the driving age in Tennessee?

My 14-year-old son is ready to learn how to drive and wants to know how to get a license. But it’s been a while since I went through the process myself. What’s the driving age in Tennessee?

There’s nothing more exciting than hitting the road for the first time! The driving age in
Tennessee
is 15 years old for a learner permit.
A Tennessee learner permit allows teenagers to operate a vehicle with a licensed driver over 21 years old in the front seat. In order to get a permit, your son will need to:
  • Bring all required documents (including a financial responsibility form and proof of school attendance) to a Driver Services location
  • Pass the vision test
  • Pass the knowledge test
Young drivers can then get an intermediate driver’s license at the age of 16 after they:
  • Have had their permit for a minimum of 180 days
  • Practice 50 hours of driving (including 10 hours at nighttime)
  • Pass a road skills test
The final step for teen drivers is getting an intermediate unrestricted license. To obtain this license, your son must:
  • Be 17 years old
  • Have held an intermediate restricted license for one year
  • Have less than six points on his driving record
  • Have less than two seatbelt violations on his driving record
Once your son turns 18, he can then apply for a regular driver’s license!
