My son is about to enter high school and wants to get a learner’s permit. But we just moved to Rhode Island, and I don’t know the state’s license requirements just yet. What’s the driving age in Rhode Island?

What an exciting time in your son’s life! The driving age in
Rhode Island
is 16 years old for a limited instruction permit. Your son will need to follow these steps:
- Complete a 33-hour driver education course
- Pass the written exam
- Bring required documents to any local DMV branch location to get a learner’s permit
- Complete a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience (including 10 hours at night) with a supervising driver
- Pass the road test at least six months after getting the permit
- Apply for a limited provisional license
Once your son turns 18 years old, he may then renew his provisional license on his birthday to obtain a full operator’s license. However, if he’s between 17 and 18 and has held his limited provisional license for 12 months, he may also get his full license then.
