What an exciting time in your son’s life! The driving age in Rhode Island
is 16 years old for a limited instruction permit. Your son will need to follow these steps:
Complete a 33-hour driver education course
Bring required documents to any local DMV branch location to get a learner’s permit
Complete a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience (including 10 hours at night) with a supervising driver
Pass the road test at least six months after getting the permit
Apply for a limited provisional license
Once your son turns 18 years old, he may then renew his provisional license on his birthday to obtain a full operator’s license. However, if he’s between 17 and 18 and has held his limited provisional license for 12 months, he may also get his full license then.
