What is the driving age in New York?

You’re moving at the perfect time if you want to start driving, since the driving age in
New York
is 16. At 16, you can apply for a learner’s permit as long as you have permission from a parent or guardian—you’ll need their signature on your application. The next step is to gather the required documents, and head to the DMV, where you’ll take the vision and written tests and pay a fee.
A New York learner’s permit allows you to practice driving under the supervision of a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old.
You can apply for your full license at 18 years old if:
- You’ve graduated from a state-approved driver’s education program
- You have at least 50 hours of driving practice, including 15 hours of nighttime driving
- You’ve passed the DMV road test
