What is the driving age in New York?

I'm a 16-year-old New Yorker, and my family is about to move out of the city. I never thought too much about driving laws before, but I’ll probably need a car once we move. At what age can you start driving in New York State?

You’re moving at the perfect time if you want to start driving, since the driving age in
New York
is 16. At 16, you can apply for a learner’s permit as long as you have permission from a parent or guardian—you’ll need their signature on your application.
The next step is to gather the required documents, and head to the DMV, where you’ll take the vision and written tests and pay a fee.
A New York learner’s permit allows you to practice driving under the supervision of a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old.
You can apply for your full license at 18 years old if:
  • You’ve graduated from a state-approved driver’s education program
  • You have at least 50 hours of driving practice, including 15 hours of nighttime driving
  • You’ve passed the DMV road test
If you’re thinking about your New York learner’s permit, you need to start thinking about
car insurance
, too. Shopping for coverage can be a little intimidating, especially if you’re a new driver—but don’t worry, the
