Happy almost birthday! The earliest driving age in California
is 15.5 years old. At that point, you can get a driver’s permit (aka provisional license). California requires teens to complete a driver training course before getting their license, as well. Let’s look at the differing requirements below.
For a driver’s permit, you must complete the following:
Be at least 15.5 but under 18 years old
Complete the Driver License Application, including your parents’ signatures
Show the DMV proof of your identity and residency in California
Submit any forms from your driver’s ed course
After you gather the necessary documents, you’ll need to schedule an appointment to visit the DMV in person. This appointment is where you’ll pay the application fee, get your fingerprint scanned, take a vision test, get your photo taken, and take the written driving test.
With your provisional license, you must drive with a parent, guardian, or adult who is over 25 years old and has a California driver’s license. When six months are up, you can get a restricted license.
During the first 12 months with a restricted license, you cannot drive between 11 PM and 5 AM or transport passengers under 20 years old (unless accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian, or adult over 25).
