What is the curfew for minors driving in Washington state?
My daughter is the proud new holder of an intermediate driver’s license! In all of the excitement, we lost track of the rules for new drivers, though, including the time restrictions. What is the curfew for teenage drivers in Washington state?

The curfew for minors driving in
Washington
state is 1 a.m. More specifically, teenagers under age 18 with an intermediate driver’s license are not prohibited to drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. without approved supervision.Washington law does allow teens to break this curfew, however, as long as one of the following is accompanying the minor while driving:
- A parent
- A legal guardian
- A licensed adult who is at least 25 years old
However, having a parent, guardian, or qualified adult in the car does not excuse the minor from the following restrictions:
- No passengers below the age of 20 besides immediate family members for the first six months
- No more than three passengers below the age of 20 besides immediate family members for the next six months
As long as your
young driver
follows all these requirements, she should have no problem graduating to her full license after 12 months when she’s 17. Just don’t forget to add her to your car insurance! Jerry
