What is the best route to Yellowstone coming from the east?
I know Yellowstone National Park is huge, so I want to make sure I plan to enter the park at the correct entrance. I’ll be driving from Buffalo, Wyoming to get there. What’s the best route to Yellowstone coming from the east side?

It’s definitely a good thing you’re planning ahead as there are five different entrances to Yellowstone National Park! The best route to Yellowstone coming from the east, however, will take you down the following roads:
- Follow US-16 W to WY-431 W/Gooseberry Creek Rd in McNutt
- Take WY-120 W to US-14 W in Park County
- Follow US-14 W into the park
You’ll pass through the town of Cody on your way—it’s a Western-themed area with Buffalo Bill-inspired activities and souvenirs. Continue through Cody and you’ll find the East Entrance to Yellowstone, right on the edge of Yellowstone Lake. You’ll also be close to the following features of the park:
- West Thumb Geyser Basin
- Old Faithful
- Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Before you start your trip, be sure to check the National Park Service (NPS) website for
road closure
announcements and other advisories.Even though your drive to the East Entrance will only take about four hours, you still may want to add
towing and labor coverage
