That’s quite a road trip! The best route from Las Vegas and Kansas City will depend on whether you’re looking for efficiency or scenery.
The fastest, most efficient route will take you just over eighteen hours. You’ll take I-15 North for about 242 miles, and then merge onto 1-70 East. Don’t worry—there are plenty of rest stops along the way if you need a short-term or overnight break.
If you have the time—and extra money—-you’ll probably want to soak in the sights. We suggest this much slower, but far more gorgeous route:
Take I-15 East to Utah 9 highway towards Hurricane.
Then, take 59 East to Fredonia.
Head north on 89A to Kanab, turn and head east on 89 to Lake Powell, and then onto Highway 98.
Follow along Highway 98, then head NE to Kayenta and take the 163 NE-bound.
Then, make your way towards Montezuma Creek, Utah.
Keep following the 41 back to the 160 and then the 491, heading into Cortez. Once there, take the 160 into Durango and brace yourself for breathtaking views.
Head north out of Durango on the 550 through Silverton, Ironton, and Ouray into Montrose.
Continue through Gunnison, turning left at Poncha Springs, heading up the 285.
Continue through Leadville, and then get on I-70 East for smooth sailing all the way to Kansas City.
