What is the best route from Kona to Hilo?

I’m spending my vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii, and I want to take a road trip from Kona to Hilo. What’s the best route between the two? Anything I should stop to see along the way?

That sounds like a wonderful vacation you’ve got planned! It depends on what you mean by the best route from Kona to Hilo—if you’re looking for the fastest way, it will take about an hour and a half if you take this route:
  • Head northeast on Palani Rd toward Palani Rd
  • Continue onto HI-190/Hawaiʻi Belt Rd
  • Turn right onto Daniel K. Inouye Hwy
  • Continue onto Saddle Rd
  • Continue onto Puainako St
  • Turn left onto Komohana St
  • Turn right onto Ponahawai St
If you’ve got a bit more time on your hands, you can take the long way to Hilo via Hawaii Belt Road and Mamalahoa Highway. This route will take you up the coast and through some wonderful towns full of cafes, delicious food, and shopping opportunities.
There’s a ton to see along your way to Hilo. Check out some of these must-see spots on the Big Island:
  • Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation (Kailua-Kona)
  • Onizuka Center for International Astronomy Visitor Information Station (Hilo)
  • Rainbow Falls (Hilo)
