I’ll be moving out of my parents’ house to go to college soon and I’ll have to start scheduling my own oil changes for my car. I’m a little embarrassed because my dad always handled it for me, so now I’m not sure what information I need. What is the 2018 Honda Civic’s oil type?

The good news is that you actually don’t need to provide anything other than your car’s make and model when you schedule an oil change—but it’s always a good idea to know some information about your vehicle! A 2018

uses 0W-20 fully-synthetic motor oil.Since it sounds like you’re new to taking care of your car by yourself, here are some other things to remember when it comes to routine maintenance:
- Get your oil changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles to prevent overheating and engine damage.
- Replace your wiper blades every six to 12 months or anytime you notice streaks on your window.
- Top off your window washing fluid every so often. You actually don’t need a mechanic for this one. You can do it on your own, even if you have no experience working on cars! All you need to do is buy some fluid from an auto parts store, lift your hood and look for your fluid reservoir—it’s usually a white, translucent container. Then simply lift off the cap and fill it up to the line.
- Have a wheel alignment done every 6,000 miles to prevent your tires from wearing out, and replace your tires every 50,000 miles.
- Get your battery tested every five years, and replace it when it gets low on power.
- Find the recommended maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual and follow it as closely as you can. When you bring your car to the mechanic for “maintenance” they will check your fluids, filters, belts, hoses, and other parts to make sure everything is working as it should.
Staying on top of regular car care is a great way to save money in the long term since you’ll be able to catch small problems before they turn into big ones that can be much more expensive to fix.
