What is rev matching?
I’m learning how to drive a stick shift, but I keep lurching forward when I shift gears. My wife (a gearshift pro) tells me I need to learn how to “rev match”. What’s rev-matching?

Great question! That’s an important skill to learn when driving manual—rev matching is a technique used to switch gears smoothly, with as little disruption as possible to the car’s balance. The goal is to match the speed of your engine with the speed of your transmission when down-shifting—doing this smoothly makes a big difference in the lifespan of your engine.
Why rev match? When you’re downshifting, you want to avoid the sudden transfer of the position of your car’s weight—this can easily cause your tires to lose their grip and spin out, especially when downshifting around corners.
By smoothly matching your engine’s speed to your transmission, you avoid excessive wear on your engine, clutch, and gears.
In order to rev match when you’re downshifting, push the clutch in and immediately press the throttle, then release the clutch.
