I recently moved to New Jersey and I know reckless driving is taken very seriously here. What types of violations qualify as reckless driving in New Jersey?

Congratulations on your move!
In New Jersey
, someone is considered to be a reckless driver if they display a “willful or wanton disregard for the rights or safety of others.” So whether intentional or not, if you put others in harm’s way because of your driving it may be considered reckless.
Because the definition of reckless driving is general, what qualifies as reckless driving is sometimes subjective. With that said, here are some common examples of reckless driving:
  • Driving at excessive speeds (more than 15 mph over the limit)
  • Passing someone when it is illegal to do so
  • Driving while distracted
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
These aren’t the only violations that can qualify as reckless driving, so you’ll want to remain careful and aware on the road. If you are hit with a reckless driving charge in New Jersey, you can expect:
  • A fine of up to $200
  • Up to 60 days of jail time
  • 5 points on your license
  • Your license to be suspended for up to 90 days
The severity of the penalties for reckless driving depends on how egregious the incident is. But considering it only takes
12 points
in 3 years to receive a suspension of your license in New Jersey, you should avoid taking any actions that could result in a reckless driving charge.
