Description: I took my car to a mechanic because the engine was hard to start. They said it was likely a bad ignition coil, which I’ve never even heard of before. What is an ignition coil, and what does it do?

Basically, your ignition coil takes the voltage from your car’s battery and transforms it into enough energy for the spark plugs to ignite your vehicle’s fuel. Without your ignition coil, your car wouldn’t start at all.
If your ignition coil isn’t working properly, there are some clear signs including:
Engine misfiring
Rough idling
Decrease in vehicle performance
Engine won’t start, or is hard to start
Exhaust backfiring
