Best of luck on your upcoming road test! A shared left turn lane can be a bit confusing when you’re new to driving, but it just means that the center lane can be used by traffic moving in both directions to make a left turn.
When you need to use a shared left turn lane to turn left, you should:
- Engage your turn signal
- Enter the center lane
- Avoid driving in the center lane—it should be kept clear for turns only
- Watch for oncoming traffic both in the center lane and oncoming lanes
- Wait for a gap in oncoming traffic and complete your turn
