What is a safety zone in driving?
My son is eligible for driving school this fall. I want to give him a headstart on the basics, but I need a little refresher. What is the purpose of a safety zone?

In the simplest terms, a safety zone is a place set aside for pedestrians. Safety zones are commonplace for areas with lots of foot traffic and can be identified by one of the following:
- A sign explaining higher fines for speeding in a pedestrian zone
- A sign to mark the beginning of the safety zone
- Striped lines across a roadway
Many safety zones require drivers to slow their vehicles. Depending on your region, those found speeding within a safety zone can be subject to steep fines. Vehicular injury to a pedestrian in this zone will result in criminal charges.
