What is a reference point when driving?

I don’t understand what a reference point is when you’re driving. Does it help you to figure out what speed you’re going? That’s usually what it means in science.

That’s a great line of thinking, but with driving, a reference point actually refers to something that you can use as a visual guide to help you turn or
park your car
. The stationary point will help you to understand the positions of your wheels, bumpers, and the sides of your car so that you don’t accidentally scrape or bump the curb.
Examples of reference points might include:
  • Streetlamps
  • Traffic cones
  • Signs
But anything that helps you visualize the space that you want to maneuver through works as a reference point.
