What is a rated driver?

I just learned that my adult son, who lives with us but doesn't drive, is listed as a not-rated driver on my car insurance policy. What does this mean?

“Seeing others on your car insurance policy can be confusing!
There are several ways that
car insurance companies
classify household members. Rated and non-rated drivers are two of those.
A rated driver is someone who drives the vehicle regularly and whose actions will affect your rates, while a non-rated driver typically won’t affect your rates.
If you have a teen driver or someone with a poor driving record, this is great news. Sometimes an insurance company may classify adults or teens who live with you as non-rated drivers, regardless of whether they drive your vehicle or not.
Every insurance company has different rules, so it can be complicated. The best thing to do is call your insurance or look over your policy’s terms and conditions. It can help define the
verbiage in your policy
.
As you’re reviewing your policy now, you may also want to shop around. Comparing rates between insurance companies is a great way to save money. If you’d like help, go to
